2018 Race – Press Release

The 2018 Rotary Alderney Half Marathon and 10km Run was held on Saturday 1st September starting at The Butes at midday.

Organiser Ros Whittome said “There was a much better than hoped for response to this event with entrants coming from Guernsey, the UK and France as well as our faithful local contingent. We had many entrants from Guernsey this year, hopefully taking advantage of the new ferry service supplied by The Little Ferry Company which provided a reasonably cheap method of getting to the island. The sun came out and the breeze that had been there in the morning died down, so it was a really hot!”

Lead car set off driven by Neil Harvey, the 72 runners and walkers followed on and were accompanied by last man cyclist Adam Barnes. Rotarians and friends provided the marshals, the timekeepers, photographers and the St John’s Ambulance were on call for the event. The finish was at The Sailing Club where there were prizes for every category. The overall winner was Jamie De Garis again, in a time of 1 hour 45.08 minutes. The competitors were treated to sandwiches, quiche, cakes, soft drinks, teas and coffees and came away with a mug, a medal and a tee-shirt for participating.

Our thanks go to the States Of Alderney, The Cheape Trust, Stenham Trustees and The Fort Group for their sponsorship. Also for the services of St John’s Ambulance, The Sailing Club (for the venue) The Football Club (put out the signage) and the volunteers who were not Rotarians but who generally helped to marshal, serve the teas, give out the medals, tee shirts and mugs and anything else that was needed. David Nash was the official photographer and took some really fabulous photos. Special thanks must also go to the States Works Department and the Police for arranging to close Victoria Street for half an hour in order to allow the runners to go through the Town safely.

Everyone agreed that it was a good event and hopefully many will return next year. The event will be held on 31st August 2019 and we hope to see many returning, familiar faces along with even more new ones. Get training everyone!
